VERY IMPORTANT: As we approach another anniversary of the hailstorm of October 2010, we also approach another set of deadlines that insurance providers set in order to file a claim. When is the actual deadline? It varies among providers and even from policy to policy. Some had one year post storm deadlines and we now approach a two year post storm deadline. Our best advice: If you were in the hail zone- check your policy and have your roof checked by a licensed reputable roofing professional.
Hailstorms can severely damage a roofing system, even long after the storm has passed. The monsoon season is upon the Valley, and even hail damage from previous seasons can present unexpected problems today. Professional roofers can inspect your roofing system for any lingering effects of hail damage and offer the right roofing repairs to help your home stand up to the elements this season and beyond.
Hail causes a range of problems. It's important to understand that hail can do several different types of damage to your entire roofing system. Hail can pierce a roof and cause leaks, but this is uncommon. Typically, hail will wear down the granules on your shingles. Without a full layer of granules, shingles become vulnerable to ultraviolet radiation, which slowly breaks down the integrity of this roofing material. Over time, UV exposure can cause your shingles to curl, crack, and even fall off.
Hail damage can remain unseen. In the aftermath of a severe storm, your roof may appear relatively unscathed. However, without a professional roofing inspection, underlying damage that is invisible to the naked eye may remain undetected. It takes an experienced roofer with the right equipment to spot damage caused by hail that would otherwise be hidden.
Hail damage should be addressed immediately. This is worth repeating. Homeowners should have their roofing systems inspected by a roofing company as soon as possible in the aftermath of a severe hailstorm. Time of repair can affect the viability of any insurance claims made as a result of hail damage. Inspections will identify damage as soon as possible, so you can have roofing repairs performed quickly. Some insurance claims offer generous grace periods for homeowners, sometimes up to two years, while others may require that homeowners place claims in as little as 30 days.
